Rose Reilly MBE, born 2 January 1955, was a Scottish former women’s association football player who represented both the Scottish and Italian women’s football teams.

Reilly was a substitute for Viviana Bontacchio, who played 63 minutes in Italy’s 1-0 victory over the United States women’s national soccer team. This was the American team’s first international appearance.

In March 2007, Reilly was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, with a place in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame following in November of that year.

Reilly picked up a special PFA Scotland Merit Award in 2011 becoming the first female recipient. A portrait of Rose Reilly took centre stage at a new Scottish Football Museum exhibition celebrating 130 years of women’s football in Scotland in July 2012.

Reilly has played ten times in her native Scotland, and had no official links to Italy before she moved to A.C.F. Milan, Reilly was chosen for the Italian women’s national team. She was voted the best player on the Italian team that won the Mundialito 1984, an informal precursor to the women’s world cup. It was reported that Reilly, the team captain, scored in the 3-1 victory over West Germany in Caorle in northern Italy.

Reilly was born in Stewarton, East Ayrshire in Scotland. She began her footballing career as a seven-year-old with Stewarton United, a local boys’ club. At one point, she attracted the attention of scouts from Glasgow, Celtic. In 1965, she made her debut with Stewarton Thistle Ladies against the Johnston Red & White Rockets. She competed in Hughie Green’s Women’s Football Tournament, reaching the regional final. She was also part the Stewarton team that won the 1971 inaugural Scottish Cup and reached the first WFA Cup Cup final in the same year. She moved to Westthorn Utd in 1972, where she won the treble: the League Cup, Scottish Cup and the League championship. Westthorn lost 2-0 to Southampton in the WFA Cup final. In 1974, Reilly moved to Reims, a French professional women’s football team.

After a six month stint with Reims, Reilly got his A.C.F. purchase. Milan played four years for the women’s team, winning two league titles (of an eventual eight) with a variety Italian sides. After her first spell with Milan, Reilly played in Italian football until she was 40. She also had spells with Lecce and Catania’s ladies’ teams. Reilly won the Serie A Golden Boot twice in 1978 and 1981 with 43 and 45 goals, respectively (includes Italian Cup). She won the championship title in Italy and France during 1978-1979, playing for Lecce on Saturday nights and then flying to France on Sunday afternoons to play for Reims.

In 2001, Reilly lived in Stewarton with her Argentinian husband Norberto Peralta and daughter, Valentina.
