Suziann Reid (born on January 14 1977) was an American Jamaican former track field sprinter who focused on the 400-meter sprint. She set a personal best for the distance of 50.74 seconds in the 1999 distance. She won silver in the American women’s 4 400-meter relay team at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics. It was her part in the World Championship team twice more between 2001 and 2005. She also contributed to America to win the United States to silver at the 2002 IAAF World Cup and gold at the 2001 Goodwill Games.
Reid was a frequent participant in her country of the United States in 4 x 400-meter relay teams. Her first gold medal came during the 1999 Summer Universiade, where she led a group comprising Yolanda Brown-Moore Yulanda Nelson as well as Mikele Barber to gold medals. She finished the 400m finalist during the 1999 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to Maicel Malone, and earned an individual spot and a relay place in teams for 1999’s World Championships in Athletics She was eliminated in the semi-finals of 400 mrace, but took home the silver medal in the finals of the relay team that included Michelle Collins and Jearl Miles Clark, which was a distant second to Russia. Reid’s best career run of 50.74 seconds in 1999 ranked as third overall in the United States.
In the 2000 track season she won her first national title at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, bringing an end to Jearl Miles Clark’s three- year streak. She failed to make the Olympic team after missing the final at the 2000 United States Olympic Trials. She repeated as USA Indoor champion and ran at the 2001 IAAF World Indoor Championships, though an injury during her run in the final saw her finish a distant sixth. With a fifth-place finish at the 2001 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships she made the United States relay team. Reid did not another medal at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics as she dropped the baton on the final exchange and the team of Miles-Clark, Monique Hennagan and Collins ended in fourth as a result. Redemption came at the 2001 Goodwill Games, where she anchored the same team to a gold medal in 3:24.63 minutes.
In the last few years of her career, Reid remained a finalist at national level and made two last international appearances in the relay. A team of Collins, Crystal Cox, Reid and Hennagan claimed the silver medals behind the Americas team at the 2002 IAAF World Cup. At the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, Reid led off the American women, but a line violation in the heats stage saw them disqualified. She retired after that competition.
In 1997, at the NCAA Indoors she was off the podium in the 400m but was able to finish second at the relay. She broke her personal record in the time of 50.95 seconds at the NCAA Outdoor Championships final, defeated to LaTarsha Stroman. She won the relay championship to Texas Longhorns. In Kingston, Jamaica with dual American citizenship, she came to in the United States at age eleven and started attending Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland. Her mother was an athlete in the track and field during her childhood. Reid started cross country running in high school at age 14 when the coach suggested that she join as a member of the track indoor team. It was a hugely successful change as she took home an 800-meter and 400-meter running double in the Maryland state championship for high schools in 1992. She then followed that up with three straight sprint wins in the 100-meter sprint 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash between 1993 and 1995. At the national level she took home the 400 m in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in 1994 and 1995. When she completed the high school season,, she achieved a personal best of 52.77 seconds in the 400-meter race.
Reid was awarded the opportunity to study sports at The University of Texas at Austin and she began to compete in their Texas Longhorns collegiate track team. In her first major event, she finished third in the individual race as well as in the relay of 4 x 400 meters in the 1996 NCAA Women’s Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. It was a success in the NCAA Outdoor Championships where she won the 400 m title and also set a collegiate record time of 3:27.50 minutes to take the victory in the relay. After gaining eligibility to represent her country in United States, she won the American junior title in the 400 meters and also won the silver medal alongside Andrea Burlacu at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Athletics.
For her collegiate career, she was given the Honda Broderick Award (now the Honda Sports Award) as the female track and field athlete of the year in 1999.
