His contract was accepted by the Red Sox as an international free agent on the 2nd of July at the age of 16 by Boston Scout Luis Scheker. His debut came in the following season for the DSL Red Sox, going 3-1 and an 2.90 ERA in 13 starts. He traveled to America during the 2008 season, and played in Low-A Lowell which was 5-5 with an 3.14 ERA in 11 starts. He was a Single-A player in 2009 Greenville which was 10-7 and an 3.82 ERA in 23 starts. He played in 2010 for High-A Salem finishing 9-11 and an 4.06 ERA in 26 starts. Despite the worst year of his brief professional career, the pitcher was named for play in the All-Star Futures Game facing 2 batters, Logan Morrison and Danny Espinosa who both were retired. The offseason was when Pimentel agreed to sign a 1-year contract worth $414,000 that would protect himself from Rule V Draft. The year began playing Double-A Portland and then went 9-9 and an 9.12 ERA in 15 starts and was then demoted to Salem. He ended the season with a 6-13 record with an 6.79 ERA in 25 starts.
On the 26th of December 2012, The Red Sox traded him (along with Mark Melancon, Jerry Sands and Ivan DeJesus, Jr.) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Brock Holt and Joel Hanrahan. Joel Hanrahan got his MLB debut on September 4, 2013, for the Pirates. He pitched from the bullpen and played five games in 2013. Pimentel was the first player to debut in 2014 with the Pirates Opening Day roster.
Pimentel was designated for assignment by the Pirates on April 5, 2015.
