At the time of the 1978 NHL Entry Draft, Tambellini was picked as the 15th pick overall for The New York Islanders. He spent two seasons in New York, winning a Stanley Cup with them in the season of 1980. He was traded at the trade deadline the following season, along together with Chico Resch to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Mike McEwen. Tambellini remained in Colorado over two years, and that included their debut campaign as New Jersey Devils as the team was moved in 1982. As a player for the New Jersey Devils, Tambellini was the first player of the new team to score their first ever hat trick the 3rd of December, 1982, in an 8-4 victory against Hartford. Following the 1982-83 campaign, Steve was dealt for the Calgary Flames. They would stay with him for two years before becoming an unrestricted free agent for the Vancouver Canucks, where he would complete the remainder of his NHL career.

In 2004, he was inducted into the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame.

On July 31, 2008 he was named General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers after the Oilers promoted Kevin Lowe to President of Hockey Operations.

In his professional profession, Steve Tambellini represented Canada at three different occasions. In 1978, the year he was a member of Team Canada in the World Junior Hockey Championship and won the bronze medal following 2 goals as well as two assists. He was a participant at the World Hockey Championship as well as the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he scored a goal as well as three assists.

He would be rewarded again, being named the Director of Player Personnel for both the 2003 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships as well as the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
