Steve Fairnie is one of the most popular and richest British musician who was born on February 21, 1951 in Fraserburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. Stephen Angus Fairnie (21 February 1951 22 February 1951 – 22 February 1993) was a British musician actor, artist, and performer, as the frontman of the post-punk group Writz as well as being one half, along with his partner Bev Sage of the 80s pop group Techno Twins (later just The Technos).
Fairnie Sage and Fairnie Sage continued to be they remained the Techno Twins, covering “Falling in Love Again”, that charted in 1982 and then releasing Swing Together, a Glenn Miller-meets-Marilynn Monroe mashup. The album Technostalgia was released in 1985, the album The Technos, Foreign Land–produced and arranged by Anne Dudley of Art of Noise was released to acclaim from critics however, sales were abysmal. In August 1985, The Technos played their final live performance during the Greenbelt festival which is an annual Christian festival in which they were heavily involved since the festival’s inception over a decade prior. After a hiatus of three years following their departure, the Technos released their final album Songs for an Unnerving World came out. In tandem with their Technos work, Fairnie and Sage formed the avant-garde art group Casual Tease. In addition to an album, which was credited as being by the Techno Orchestra, there were periodic outbursts from Casualtease in the 1980s.
Fine artist Fairnie’s most famous artworks were created during the second decade of the 1980s, until his death in 1993. He also had numerous assignments to illustrate books and magazines which included US poetry writer Robert Lax’s book of the 24th as well as his 7th. Other projects that were creative included the rock’n’roll game board Hype created and developed with Willie Williams. Fairnie was also in an silent TV comedy show known as The Kid, broadcast by the BBC in 1986. He was an occasional Charlie Chaplin lookalike, assignments included some 1980s IBM newspaper advertisements.

In Fraserburgh with a childhood at Bristol, Fairnie excelled in fine artand eventually graduated at the London’s Royal College of Art with an MA in Sculpture (contemporaries included Turner Prize winner Tony Cragg). He founded the acoustic Gospel trio Fish Co with fellow singer-songwriter Steve Rowles and released the albums Can’t Be Bad in 1975 and Beneath the Laughter in 1978, which featured a full backing band, which included Bev Sage, the wife of Fairnie and her husband Steve Rowles. The duo would later form the basis of their next project Writz.
Writz began to become a fixture in the postpunk London scene, playing at the biggest venues, including at the Marquee Club. The band’s commercial success was not guaranteed but the 1979 song Night Nurse (produced by 10cc’s Kevin Godley and Lol Creme) was a minor success and was then followed by an album Writz. The band , today Famous Names – played in the Dennis Potter LWT production Cream in My Coffee. Famous Names folded in 1981 with a large portion of the members and members moving on to different musical ventures, including Willie Williams, who went on to be a part of the U2 group. The sound engineer Ken Watts was tour director for George Michael from Wham! Then, Monitor Engineer John Roden went on to become one of the music industry’s most renowned live engineers, working with clients such as Paul McCartney.
In 1993, Fairnie died from an asthma attack while on a field trip to Brixham, Devon, with a group of students from Weston-super-Mare College, where he was a lecturer. Despite his limited commercial success (“The thing I hate most about myself is my complete inability to make money.”), in his lifetime he inspired scores of up and coming musicians and artists, the most notable example being U2. During the Zoo TV tour, Bono would close shows citing a 1979 Fairnie lyric from the Writz track ‘Muscle Culture’: “I have a vision, television”.
