Stephen Edward Claridge (born 10 April 1966) is an English football pundit as well as a former coach. He was a pundit on BBC Sport football shows including Football Focus and The Football League Show up to 2015 when he took on the roles of director and manager at the Salisbury, a newly-formed club. In 1998, Claridge was signed by his home team Portsmouth on loan. On 30 January 2007 Claridge joined Harrow Borough and scored on his debut in a 4–4 draw against Margate.

In the month of January 1994 Claridge made the move into Birmingham City for PS350,000. In 1994-95, he was one of the few players since Trevor Francis to score 20 goals in one season for Birmingham which brought him the player of the year award. Claridge was signed by Leicester City for PS1.2 million in March 1996. It was in Leicester where Claridge was promoted to the Premiership and scored the winning goal in the play-off final, which secured Leicester promotion as well as that 1997 League Cup final replay. In 1997, his autobiography, Tales From The Boot Camps, written together with Ian Ridley, was first published.

Claridge’s professional career was renowned for its long-lasting and diverse. Born in Portsmouth the city of his birth, he’s played several seasons playing for clubs that hail from Hampshire and Dorset beginning his professional career with league-less Fareham Town in 1983. After failing to sign an ongoing contract at the his local team, A.F.C. Bournemouth, Claridge spent three years at Weymouth during his longest-running single stint for any other club. From 1988 until 1996 Claridge was a player for a variety of Football League teams, before changing towards Leicester City with whom he participated for the Premier League and won the 1997 Football League Cup. After 1998, Claridge relocated to Portsmouth and was also the player manager from 2000 until 2001. Following a brief stint with Millwall and then he moved into the Southern Premier League to work as the player manager for Weymouth. When the contract ended in 2004, Claridge played for ten different clubs across a range of leagues. He never spent more than a single season with a single team. Claridge has played at every level of English football and been a part of over 1000 professional or semi-professional football games.

In October 1988, Claridge was transferred from Crystal Palace for a brief time before deciding to join the Division Four team Aldershot for the season 1988-89. Claridge stayed at the club before joining Cambridge United for PS75,000. The club moved Cambridge into the Second Division (which later became the First Division) and stayed with the club for the bulk of the following four years. His tense relationship to manager John Beck, which was caused by Claridge’s gambling addiction ultimately led to his being transferred to Luton Town for only PS120,000 in March 1992. Due to Luton having financial difficulties, the club was able to sell him back to Cambridge for PS190,000 only five months later (Beck was out of the club prior to this).

In his later playing career, chronologically, Claridge played for Brighton and Hove Albion, Brentford, Wycombe Wanderers, Gillingham, Bradford City and Walsall. In the summer of 2005 he was appointed as manager of Millwall, but following board-room changes he was relieved of his duties after just 36 days, before his team had played any competitive matches. His replacement was Colin Lee. The decision to dismiss Claridge was taken by new chairman Theo Paphitis, who stated to the BBC that “we had a strong chance of being relegated under Steve”. Millwall were indeed relegated from the Championship that season.

Claridge then came out of retirement once more in October 2011 when he signed for Gosport Borough of the Southern League Division One South & West as a player-coach.
