Stephen Pears (born 22 January 1962) is a famous English ex- footballer. The native of Brandon, County Durham, He was a goalkeeper at Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Hartlepool United in a career that lasted for 20 years.

Pears played the role of Middlesbrough Academy goalkeeping coach where helped bring in players like Ross Turnbull and David Knight. Pears was promoted from his role as an Academy coach to be the goalkeeping coach of the club in 2007, when Paul Barron left for Newcastle United in 2007.

On 4 July 2014, Pears was announced as assistant manager and goalkeeping coach at Hartlepool United. On 5 October, Pears was named caretaker-manager alongside Sam Collins following the departure of Colin Cooper and was kept on as goalkeeping coach following the appointment of Paul Murray as manager on 23 October.

On 19 July 2015, Pears was announced as goalkeeping coach at National League side Gateshead.

In 1995, he was released following a sold out memorial match that was the last game played at Ayresome Park prior to Middlesbrough relocated into their new home at the Riverside Stadium. In the match, Pears was allowed to score a penalty, which earned Pears the distinction of being the only player who scored a goal in Ayresome Park.

Stephen Pears started his career at Manchester United as an understudy to Gary Bailey. Then, Pears struggled to displace him and eventually make it into first-team. In the 1983-84 football season, to improve his match-practice the player was transferred on loan to Middlesbrough on loan. He was a popular fan. Middlesbrough tried to sign him for a permanent deal, but they failed to pay the cost of PS80,000. But, Middlesbrough made a second attempt to take on Pears and he joined the club on a permanent basis in 1985.

The next season saw the club be eliminated. However, his performance received praise from the supporters. The 1987-1988 season, Pears helped the club get promoted. This year’s season Pears established a record for the club with 7 consecutive clean sheets. Some of his most memorable performances this season were at the hands of Everton during the FA Cup and against Leicester City in a game that was dedicated to his father who passed away in the year 2000. Pears made over 400 games for Middlesbrough between 1983 and 1995. In 1992 Pears was invited to the England team, but was forced to leave the team after the fracture of his cheekbone in an accident in a collision with Dion Dublin.

Pears position of goalkeeping coach for the Middlesbrough first team was terminated on 21 November 2013 after Middlesbrough appointed their new manager, Aitor Karanka and he has since been replaced by Leo Percovich.
