Solonei Rocha da Silva (born 18 April 1982 in Penapolis, Sao Paulo) is a Brazilian long-distance athlete who competes in races for marathons. He holds a personal best of 2:11:32 and has took home the gold medal for the marathon race at the 2010 Pan American Games.

The season of 2011 began with a win in his very first South American title as he beat his fellow Brazilian Gladson Barbosa with a sprint win in the men’s 12km race in the South American Cross Country Championships in Asuncion, Paraguay. In March, he participated for the first time in Europe He was the first non-African to finish in the Lisbon Half Marathon, where the race was a tenth place finish with a time of 1:04:10 minutes. Then he traveled to Italy to participate in the Padua Marathon and he ran an individual best of 2:11:32 hours to place fourth behind Kenya’s Peter Kimeli Some. Da Silva returned to Brazil and, later in the year, finished fourth nationally in both the 5000m and 10,000 meters (including his personal record time of 14:12.81 minutes at the latter race).

His marathon performances earned him a spot on the Brazilian team for the 2010 Pan American Games. He started the race with the fastest times and did just that when he won the silver medal with 2:36:37 hours. He also had over an hour to spare against the runner-up Diego Colorado of Colombia. It was the fourth consecutive victory in the history of Brazil for the man’s Pan American marathon, following after victories for Vanderlei De Lima and Franck of Almeida.

Da Silva worked as a waste collector in Penapolis in his early twenties, but it wasn’t until 2009, when he was of 27, that he started to get fascinated by sports. On the advice by his spouse, he took part in an event in the local area held in honour of the saint Francis of Assisi. Though the race was his very first time to compete over large distances, he amazed himself by placing in third position.

In the following year, he took part in an event of 10,000 meters that took place in Rio de Janeiro and won in 29:39.72 minutes. In the Sao Paulo Half Marathon Corpore in April of 2010, he placed third. Then he moved up to compete in the full marathon just a month after. He stunned the field during the Porto Alegre Marathon by winning in his first attempt with 2:15:45 hours. Under the direction by twice-time Olympian Clodoaldo Do Carmo da Silva represented Esporte Clube Pinheiros in the 10,000-meter race at the Trofeu Brasil of Atletismo (the Brazilian championships) and placed fourth in his first national-level event.

He was invited to the 2012 London Marathon and came eighteenth. A better performance followed in June’s São Paulo, which he won in a time of 2:12:25.
