Smbat Lputian is one of the most popular and richest Armenian chess grandmaster who was born on February 14, 1958 in Yerevan, Armenia. Smbat Gariginovich (sometimes changed to Lputyan; Armenian: Smbat Lpowtyan ; born on 14 February 1958, Yerevan) is an Armenian Grandmaster of chess. He participated first in the the tournament in Berlin 1982. He was the first to share at Athens 1983 and later at Irkutsk 1983. Then, he was at Sarajevo 1985, and then at Irkutsk 1986. He shared his first at Hastings 1986-87 and later in Dortmund 1988. He won the Armenian Championship in 1978, 1980, 1998, and 2001. The year 2006 was the first time he was awarded the gold medal for the team (together together with Levon Aronian Vladimir Akopian, Karen Asrian, Gabriel Sargissian and Artashes Minasian) at the 37th Chess Olympiad. Smbat Lputyan has served as the first president of the Chess Academy of Armenia since 2002.
He was awarded the title in December 2009. received with the honorary title “Honoured Master of Sport of the Republic of Armenia”.
In Juli 2009’s FIDE list, his Elo score is set at 2574. His username in the Internet Chess Club is “SM”.
