Rosemarie “Rosi”, Ackermann (nee Witschas, born 4 April 1952), is an East German high jumper. On 26 August 1977, in Berlin, she was the first female high jumper to reach 2.00m.
In 1978, she lost her European title to Sara Simeoni, an Italian jumper. They both reached the world-record height at 2.01 m. Simeoni was Ackermann’s rival. Ackermann’s celebrations in the beginning caused the rod to tip over, and she was left with second place. After the 1980 Olympics, Ackermann quit athletics, finishing fourth just outside of the medals.
1974 saw her win her first international title at the European Championships, Rome. She also set a new world record (1.95m). She married Manfred Ackermann in 1974 and took his name. She won the gold medal at 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, two years later.
