Due to the shortage of male athletes in U.S. figure skating, Heekin-Canedy’s coach set up a partnership with an Ukrainian. Heekin-Canedy started competing for Ukraine alongside Dmitri Zyzak in 2007. Following their separation, she competed with Alexander Shakalov from 2009 to 2011. They were guided by Galit Chait and Natalia Dubova. Shakalov quit following their 2011, World Championships.
In the middle of 2011, Heekin-Canedy joined with Dmitri D. Dun. In their first season they took home the Ukrainian national championship and finished 15th in both 2012’s 2012 European Championships and 2012 World Championships.
