As as a student at Princeton at the time, he was a part of Princeton’s rowing team. He was a rower as a walk-on during his freshman year, and was co-captain during his senior year. He was given his Bayard W. Read Class of 1926 Award for the best athlete for four years. Carcagno was a part of the U.S. National Rowing Team from 2002 to 2008. He was a member of his country in United States as an alternate on two Olympic teams and one Pan-Am team as well as seven of the senior National teams. In 2002, Carcagno was part of the duo that was the first U.S. finalist lightweight pair at the World Championships. Carcagno was third at the year 2003 Pan American Games for lightweight pair. He also was the bronze medalist at the 2003 World Rowing Championships. In 2004, he was first in the pair of lightweights at Munich as well as Lucerne World Cups. He took home an Olympic bronze medal in the 2007 Pan American Games in lightweight four. He also took home the lightweight eight medal at in the 2007 World Championships.

Carcagno has been married for a while with Megan Cooke. He and Cooke have two kids. He earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018.

The coach joined his team as a male rowing instructor at Princeton in 2002. In 2002, Carcagno was appointed an assistant coach for the Mercer Junior Rowing Club in West Windsor, New Jersey. In 2009, he joined coaching team of the University of Wisconsin, first as a volunteer coach and then as an assistant coach in 2014. Before his departure from Wisconsin at the end of 2015 Carcagno served as an assistant head coach of male rowers. In the year 2016 Carcagno joined the rowing team of Duke University as the program’s boathouse manager. In 2016 , he was an assistant coach volunteer for Duke’s rowing squads. In his first year at Duke the rowing team made their first NCAA Championships appearance and earned second place in the ACC Championship. In the Duke coaching team, Carcagno won an award from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National and Region 3 Staff of the Year award.
