Deepak Dhar is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on October 30, 1951 in Bela Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Born on the 30th of October, 1951 in Pratapgarh located in north Indian state Uttar Pradesh to Murli Dhar-Rama Gupta couple. Deepak Dhar graduated in science at the University of Allahabad in the year 1970. He then earned the master’s degree in physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1972. After moving to the US and enrolled in his doctoral studies under supervision under the direction of Jon Mathews at California Institute of Technology in 1978. After receiving the PhD at the end of 1978 he returned to India to begin his career as research fellow at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in the same year. In the course of two years study and teaching, he was promoted to an full-time fellow in the year 1981 and remained in the position until 1986 when he promoted to a reader. Prior to his retirement from regular work, he had held several roles at TIFR including Associate Professor (1991) as well as professor grade from G up to G to (1995-2008). Between 1995 and 2008, he took an sabbatical of one year in the University of Paris as a visiting scientist from 1984 to 1985) as well as a month-long stay at the Isaac Newton Institute in May 2006 as an Rothschild Professor. After retirement, he maintains his relationship with TIFR as an outstanding professor at the institute. He also is an outstanding visiting faculty member for the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune.
Dhar is the associate editor for the Journal of Statistical Physics, which is a Springer publication from 2005, where Dhar was a member of the editorial board for two previous periods (1993-96 as well as 1999-2002). He is an editor-in-chief for The Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Physics (IJPAP) of the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR) and was a former editorial advisor of Physica A, an Elsevier science journal. He has been involved with journals like Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment, Physical Review E and Pramana as an editor’s board member. Deepak Dhar (born 30 October 1951) is an Indian theoretical physicist who is a distinguished professor in the department of physics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. His research is renowned for its work in stochastic processes and statistical physics, Dhar is an elected as a fellow of the three leading Indian science academies, namely the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India and the president of The World Academy of Sciences. In 2004, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is the highest organization for the Government of India for scientific research and development, conferred on Dhar Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Science and Technology, one of the top Indian science prizes, in recognition of his contribution to the physical sciences in the year 1991.
In his time during his time at Caltech, Dhar held two institution-sponsored fellowships: E. P. Anthony fellowship (1972-73) and R. P. Feynman fellowship (1974-76). He was awarded the Young Scientist Medal of the Indian National Science Academy in 1983. It was in 1983 that the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research conferred him with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize one of the most prestigious Indian science prizes in 1991. The following year, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics chose him for awarding the 1993 J. Robert Schrieffer Prize. INSA recognized him again in 2001 by awarding him the Satyendranath Bose Medal and he was awarded the TWAS Prize of The World Academy of Sciences in 2002. He also is a beneficiary of the top alumni prize from The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
