He also received an honorable mention in his entry in the PEN American Center 2008 Prison Writing contest.

Hopwood’s memoir, Law Man: My Story of Robbing Banks, Winning Supreme Court Cases, and Finding Redemption, co-written with Dennis Burke, was published in August 2012. In the memoir, Hopwood details both his life as a jailhouse lawyer and his romance with his wife, Ann Marie Hopwood, who Hopwood wrote during eight years of his imprisonment. Law Man received critical acclaim from a number of book reviewers.

On September 4, 2014, the Supreme Court of Washington approved the recommendation made by the Character and Fitness Committee of the Washington State Bar Association, permitting Hopwood to take the Washington bar examination, and to become an attorney if he passed. Hopwood confessed to a plea deal on the 28th of October, 1998 to robbing banks across Nebraska. United States District Judge Richard G. Kopf sentenced Hopwood to 12 years and three months in prison , followed by three consecutive years supervision release. He also ordered $134,544 in compensation. Kopf was astonished by the transformation of Hopwood’s character and claimed, “my gut told me that [he] was a punk–all mouth, and very little else. My viscera was wrong.” According to Kopf’s personal perception, “Hopwood proves that my sentencing instincts suck.”

He drafted his first petition for certiorari on behalf of another inmate using an inmate typewriter, in 2002. Because Hopwood wasn’t a lawyer and the only name that appeared that appeared on the document was that of another inmate, John Fellers. When it was decided that the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, he collaborated together with Seth Waxman, a former United States Solicitor General, to prepare the case. Waxman declared that his petition to get certiorari was likely to be one of the most impressive that he’d ever seen. There were 7,209 applications in that year, mostly from prisoners and those who were too poor to pay the filing fees and agreed to hear only eight petitions. One of them was Fellers in v. United States. The judge in a 9-0 ruling which found that the police been in violation of the constitution when questioning Fellers who had been sentenced for a drug conspiracy. Fellers’ sentence was eventually diminished by four years.
