Michael Elwin “the Kitch”, a former Canadian defenceman, is now an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League. Kitch has coached more than 2400 NHL games, including the playoffs, as of February 2016. He was instrumental in helping the Hawks achieve their longest winning streak, without losing a single game, in 2012/2013.
Mike Kitchen led a younger Blues team to a record of 21-46-15 in the 2005-2006 NHL season. The 2006-2007 season began the same, with the Blues falling to 7-17-4. After a seven-game losing streak in 2006, Kitchen was fired from his position as St. Louis Blues head coach and was replaced by Andy Murray, former Los Angeles Kings head coaching. John Davidson, Blues president, indicated that he would prefer Kitchen to continue with the team in a different capacity.
The Hawks were fresh off their first Stanley Cup victory in 49 years. Since arriving, Kitchen helped the team win two more Stanley Cups, in 2012-2013 and in 2014-2015.
Kitchen was relieved of his duties with the Blackhawks, which focused on defense and the penalty kill, on April 24, 2017 following the team’s second consecutive first-round playoff exit, this time against the Nashville Predators after a 4-0 sweep.
Kitchen was an assistant coach with the Newmarket Saints AHL in 1988-89. He was then hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs for the same position. Kitchen spent eight seasons leading them to the conference finals in 1993/94. Kitchen then moved to St. Louis Blues, where he remained until his promotion to head coach midway through the 2003-04 NHL season. They struggled, finishing 9th in the Western Conference. Kitchen was appointed head coach. Kitchen’s leadership, however, helped them to pick up their game and they went 10-7-4 to reach the playoffs.

Kitchen was a defensive defenseman who played for the Toronto Marlboros, an Ontario Hockey Association team that won a Memorial Cup in 1975. Kitchen became a professional in 1976-77 NHL season. He was a 14-game apprentice with the Rhode Island Reds AHL before making his NHL debut. Kitchen was a Colorado Rockies player in his first professional season. He spent the majority of his NHL career with the Colorado Rockies. Kitchen played two more seasons with the New Jersey Devils after Kitchen moved to New Jersey. Kitchen was assigned to the Maine Mariners in the AHL for the entire 1984-1985 NHL season. He decided to retire after that season.
The Kansas City Scouts selected him in the 38th round of 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. Kitchen was also selected in the seventh round, 83rd overall by the Toronto Toros in 1976 WHA Amateur Draft. However, Kitchen eventually chose to join the NHL. Kitchen was born in Newmarket (Ontario), but grew up in Schomberg.
At the end of that season, Kitchen left the Blues to become an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in 2007. He stayed with the club through the 2009-2010 season. With that contract having expired, on July 12, 2010 Mike agreed to a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks which saw him reunited with head coach Joel Quenneville. Joel and Mike had coached together in St. Louis from 1998 – 2003, leading the Blues to a franchise record 114 points in 1999-2000 while winning the President’s Trophy.
