Shawn William Bates (born April 3 1975 Medford, Massachusetts) is an American former professional ice hockey centre. He was a player for the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders.
For the 2002-03 NHL season, Bates led the NHL with six goals scored by shorthanded players.
Bates was selected to Bates by Boston Bruins in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, 4th Round the 103rd overall selection. After four seasons playing for the Bruins the team signed him as an unrestricted free agent with Islanders Islanders on July 7th 2001. Bates is best remembered for scoring a penalty shot during Game 4 in the Islanders’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinal playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bates scored a goal that smashed Maple Leaf goaltender Curtis Joseph high and gave the Islanders an advantage of 4-3 just 2:30 minutes into regulation. The Islanders were able to win the game and tie the series at 2-2. This was just the third postseason penalty Shot that has been played in Islander history and was the first time it was successful. After injuries restricted Bates to just two games during 2007-08, he was put under waivers with the Islanders on the 27th of June, 2008 and finally, he was able to buy his contract out.

Bates his teams played at the two NCAA Finals and won the NCAA Championship in 1995, Bates was selected on the All Tournament team. In all, Bates compiled 73 goals with 71 assists, 140 points and 190 penalty minutes over the course in 160 contests.
In November 2008, after almost a full season without playing, Shawn Bates debuted in Finnish SM-liiga when he played for HIFK in a regular season matchup against TPS. HIFK lost the game but Bates scored one goal and 3 assists in his debut, which attracted praise from his Head Coach Kari Jalonen.
