Her first poems published were “The Nordic Skull In Double Exposure” that appeared in Maureen Owen’s New york-based journal of literature, Telephone in addition to “The Anger of Animals” was published as an article in Intro 12, a magazine belonging to the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.
Sharon Mesmer (born in Chicago, Illinois) is a Polish-American writer, poet and essayist, as well as a Professor of Creative Writing. Her poetry collections include Annoying Diabetic Bitch (Combo Books 2007), The Virgin Formica (Hanging Loose Press 2008), Vertigo Seeks Affinities (chapbook, Belladonna Books, 2007), Half Angel, Half Lunch (Hard Press, 1998) and Crossing Second Avenue (chapbook, ABJ Press, Tokyo, 1997, released to coincide with an entire month-long reading tour through Japan which was sponsored by American Book Jam magazine). Her fiction collections include Ma Vie a Yonago (Hachette Litteratures, Paris, in French translation by Daniel Bismuth, 2005) and in Ordinary Time (Hanging Loose Press 2005) and The Empty Quarter (Hanging Loose Press 2005). She is a teacher in the graduate and undergraduate programmes of New York University and The New School. She has been a resident of Brooklyn, New York since 1988. She is a distant cousin from Franz Anton Mesmer, proponent of animal magnetism (or mesmerism) and Otto Messmer, the American animator most famous for the creation of Felix the Cat.
Following the time that Mesmer moved from Chicago to move to New York, she became an instructor at the school of Allen Ginsberg in the Brooklyn College MFA poetry program. With Ginsberg’s help she was given the MacArthur Scholarship (given through the college as a gift from John Ashbery) and represented the school in the Poetry Society of America’s “Best of New York Writing Programs.” When writing about Mesmer’s first novel, Half Angel, Half Lunch, Ginsberg characterized her work as “always interesting, beautifully bold and vivaciously modern.” It was through Ginsberg that Mesmer was exposed to Buddhist practices. Due to her connection with Ginsberg and her work, she is regarded as to be a post-Beat poet (see Beat Generation). The early poetry she wrote has links with the New York School as well as post-Language poems. In 2003 Mesmer was one of the first participants of flarf poetry which was the first poetry movement that emerged in this century. She performed along with others from the group in the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, MN in 2008 and at the Whitney Museum in New York City in 2009 during the “Flarf Versus Conceptual” event. Four of her flarf poetry appear in Postmodern American Poetry: A Norton Anthology (second edition, 2013).

Anthology appearances include I’ll Drown My Book: Conceptual Writing By Women (Les Figues, 2012), Poems for the Nation: Edited by Allen Ginsberg (Seven Stories Press, 2000) and The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry (Thunder’s Mouth Press, 1999). Her awards include a Fulbright Specialist grant (2011), an Alumna of the Year Award from Columbia College Chicago (2009), a Jerome Foundation/SASE award (as mentor to poet Elisabeth Workman, grantee, 2009) and two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships (2007 and 1999).
