Shane Cortese (born 13 August 1968) is an New Zealand actor and singer. He is probably most well-known for his character Mac for the show Nothing Trivial, Loki on the Almighty Johnsons, and Hayden Peters on hit show Outrageous Fortune. He also finished second in the season 1 of NZ Dancing with the Stars in 2005.

In January of 2006, Cortese along with the Dancing with the Stars partner Nerida Lister revealed that they were dating. Later at the end of 2006 New Idea magazine announced that they were expecting their first child. In April 2007, Kees Aras Cortese came into the world via the water at North Shore Hospital. The first photos that were exclusive to Kees were featured on the cover of New Zealand magazine New Idea one month after the birth of his son. Shane and Nerida were engaged on the 26th of February, 2008, and then married in the beginning of 2009. In 2008, Cortese was approached by a teenage girl whom he found out to be his sister from an earlier relationship. Shane along with Nerida welcomed their new son on July of 2011 with the name Jett Patrick Cortese. A passionate cricketer, he attended at the Tauranga Boys’ College and was a member of the 1st XI between 1981 until 1985.

Cortese began his professional life as an agent for travel at Palmerston North. Cortese joined the drama society for amateurs and soon discovered a passion for acting. He was a part of numerous productions before making the move into London for the first time in 1993, to develop his new career. Cortese was educated in the London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. After finishing the Musical Theatre Course in 1993 He spent ten years performing across the UK as a musical actor, and performing many times in London’s famous West End. His performances earned him critical praise from UK critics.

While in New Zealand in 2000, Cortese auditioned for the cult soap drama Shortland Street to play the character in the role of Geoff Greenlaw. He was not offered the role, and he was able to return to England to perform as a character in The West End. He got a big part in a show, but was approached with Shortland Street producers who announced they were planning to create Cortese as a character specially for him that was going to play a significant role in the series. Cortese took the chance returning home to New Zealand to take the role, despite being warned by the actors within that West End play that he could not work in the future. Cortese began the Shortland Street first appearance in the early part of 2003 as Dominic Thompson. The character was on the screen for just under two years, and then he passed away on the show in the series’ most well-loved and iconic stories.

Cortese is also the patron for ACTA (Auckland City Theatre Academy), a youth theatre company training students aged 5–18 in musical theatre. He appeared with the students in The North Shore Times in an article describing his involvement with the school and its students. In 2011 Cortese joined the cast of comedy-drama Nothing Trivial as the character of Mac. He was nominated in the prestigious Monte-Carlo Television Festival for “Best Actor” for his role. Cortese also landed the role of Loki in another of Griffin’s creations, The Almighty Johnsons, a role he maintained for the show’s three season run.
