Sergei Sergeyevich Shirokov (Russian: Sergei Sergeevich Shirokov , Russian pronunciation: [sjIr’gjej, sjIr’g[sjIr’gjej sjIr’gjejI 1986) is a Russian professional ice hockey winger who is currently playing for Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Prior to joining Vancouver In 2009 Shirokov had played for CSKA Moscow for four seasons in the Russian Superleague and Kontinental Hockey League. He was back with CSKA Moscow in 2011 after two seasons playing for his former club, the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose.
Shirokov was a part of Russia’s under-20 squad in September 2004and posted the second-highest score with Russia during the Four Nations Tournament. A few months later Shirokov made his first appearances during the World Junior Championships. In 2005, he scored 8 points over six games in the world’s top tournament for under-20 players at Grand Forks, North Dakota and helped Russia to an Olympic silver medal but defeating in the championship to Canada. In April of 2005, Russia hosted the Big Prize Tournament in St. Petersburg, where Shirokov scored assists in 2 games, as Russia recorded the highest score.
Shirokov made an immediate impression in his first training camp with the Canucks, but suffered a minor setback during the pre-season, missing a week with an injured knee. He recovered in time for the end of the pre-season to lead the team in exhibition scoring with seven points in four games. As a result, Shirokov earned a roster spot for the start of the 2009–10 season, beating out fellow Canucks prospects Cody Hodgson and Michael Grabner.
Though selected by an NHL team, Shirokov continued to play in Russia for HC CSKA Moscow and recorded a team-best and career-high 40 points in 56 games for CSKA, who competed in the newly formed Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in 2008–09. He then turned down a tax-free $500,000 contract to stay in the KHL. Instead, Shirokov defected to North America and signed with the Canucks to a two-year, two-way US$1.75 million contract on 17 August 2009. The deal allowed him to make an annual US$875,000 at the NHL level or C$67,500 in the minor leagues.
Shirokov made his debut in international competition with Russia during the 2003 U-18 Junior World Cup, winning a silver medal and scoring four points over five games. He continued to play for the Russian under-18 team as he helped Russia to record the best results during the 2003 Four Nations and 2004 Five Nations Tournaments. In 2004, at the IIHF World U18 Championships, Shirokov was able to help Russia to win another victory in the gold at Minsk, Belarus, defeating the United States 3-2 in the final. Shirokov scored two goals over six games.

As a youngster, Shirokov played in the 2000 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a player for HC CSKA Moscow.
Shirokov began his career within his first game in the Russian Hockey First League (RUS-3) with the second-tier team of HC CSKA Moscow in 2001. He played for several seasons at the top of the ladder and made his debut with the seniors in the Russian Superleague in 2004-05, losing eight games. In the following season the player scored 14 points while playing in 38 games for the Superleague. Shirokov was picked 163rd overall during the 6th round in the NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. The sixth round draft selection was taken by the Canucks through a trade together with the Florida Panthers.
The next hockey season, Shirokov competed in the under-20 Four Nations Tournament in September 2005, where Russia finished with the worst record of the tournament. A couple months later, he helped Russia to the best record at the Four Nations Tournament in November. At the 2006 World Junior Championships in British Columbia, Shirokov helped Russia to a second consecutive silver medal, losing once again to Canada in the final. He scored five points in six games.
