The father of Spann’s, Scott Spann Sr. was a six-time U.S. swimming champion and took home his bronze medal for the 200-meter single event at the 1979 Pan American Games. The Spann’s sister, Alexi Spenn was also the reigning 200-meter breaststroke champion during the 2003 Pan American Games.

In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Spann finished seventh overall, in the breaststroke 200m, clocking 2:09.76.

With only 45 days to train, and time for preparation, he competed at the 2009 USA Nationals and World Championships Trials. Spann placed fourth in both the 100m and 200m breaststrokes, narrowly missing the chance to compete at the World Championships in Rome, Italy.

The month of September, 2008 after the Olympics, Spann had surgery to remove a chunk of bone that was broken off his patella, and was encased in his tendon. The condition was previously diagnosed as tendonitis. Spann believes that he suffered the injury in the latter part of 2007 or early 2008 during dryland training. Spann participated in a tri-meet to represent Texas with Michigan and Indiana just a few weeks after the surgery. Another procedure was scheduled in November to eliminate the bursa sac that was swelling due to the fact that he began swimming too soon following the initial procedure, and to reconstruct the tendon that was weakened due to the patella. Spann was later diagnosed with an infection of staph from the wounds he had made during surgery. He required three more surgeries to combat the infection. Spann was out for the remainder of his 2008-09 NCAA season which was his first season with Texas after his transfer from Michigan.

Spann was a swimmer for Michigan between 2006 and from 2006 until. When swimming for Michigan, Spann placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke, and 4th in 100 yards breaststroke at 2009 NCAA Championships. Spann was transferred into Texas in 2008, following the conclusion of his second year. In his senior time during his time at Texas, Spann placed 2nd in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke at the 2010 NCAA Championships. He led the Longhorns to an impressive first-place finishing during the NCAA National Championship. Spann was chosen to be among the three captains (alongside Jim Robertson and Bryan Collins) for the 2010-11 Texas Longhorns swimming and diving team. They finished as second-place finisher at the NCAA National Championships.

At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Spann won the 200m breaststroke in 2:09.97, earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team roster. Spann also placed third in the 100m breaststroke at trials in 1:00.59.
