Thomas Scot Halpin (February 3 1954 until February 9 2008) was an American musician and artist who was most well-known for an incident that took place in 1973, when as a spectator at a show by The Who held at Cow Palace in Daly City, California, he ended performing drums on stage following the drummer for the band Keith Moon passed out mid-show. Halpin’s performance earned him Rolling Stone’ s “Pick-Up Player of the Year Award” later in the year.
From 1995 to his death, Halpin resided in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife Robin and son James. According to local news outlets in the Bloomington region, Halpin died February 9 8th, 2008, of a non-malignant, inoperable brain tumor.
The show continued with “Magic Bus”. The percussion of the song’s opening verses consisted only of Moon hitting two wooden blocks against one another. However, at the song’s conclusion, Moon passed out completely, slumping onto his drums. He was carried off—this time not to return. Guitarist Pete Townshend later said in an interview that Moon had consumed large tranquilizer pills, meant to be given to animals, with a large volume of brandy.
Halpin was a composer-in-residence in The Headlands Center for the Arts located located in Sausalito, California, and was a member of a variety of bands throughout his career which included: The Sponges, Funhouse, Folklore, SnakeDoctor and Plank Road. While in the West Coast, Halpin and his wife ran a brand New Wave punk rock club called The Roosevelt prior to moving into Indiana the year 1995 in order to explore possibilities in visual art.

Halpin was born in Muscatine, Iowa, to Elizabeth and Richard Halpin, of Muscatine. Halpin grew up in Muscatine with early signs of promise as an musician and artist. In the 1970s, he relocated to California and became acquainted with his spouse and frequent partner Robin Young at City College of San Francisco in 1978. Halpin earned the MA of Interdisciplinary Arts at San Francisco State University.
On the 20th of November, 1973, The Who opened their Quadrophenia US tour in the Cow Palace in Daly City which is a suburb located just from San Francisco. Halpin aged 19 and was recently relocated to the city in Muscatine, Iowa, was along with a fellow fan who was using tickets purchased from someone else. They showed up at the concert at 13 hours in advance to ensure the best seats.
In later interviews, Daltrey praised Halpin’s ability, claiming that the “papers missed it”. Interviewed by Rolling Stone, Halpin admired the Who’s stamina, admitting, “I only played three numbers and I was dead.” On January 27, 2009, the Who posted a link on their website announcing a memorial blog in memory of Halpin.
