Tod James Murphy (born December 24 1963) is a American basketball coach at the college level and a former pro basketball star. In 2009 and since then, Murphy has been the head coach at Gordon College, leading the Fighting Scots to two Commonwealth Coast Conference championships The first was in his debut season as a player (2009-10) followed by the same championship one in 2013-14.

Murphy was a five-year player in professional basketball with the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted from the Seattle SuperSonics in the third round (53rd overall) of the 1986 NBA draft. At 6-foot-9″ center forward from University of California, Irvine. After finishing his studies at UC Irvine, Murphy was selected 53rd overall during three rounds of 1986’s NBA draft , by the Seattle SuperSonics. After being cut in his training session, he started playing with the Italian League; however, his knee began to sustain cartilage injury in an exhibition game just eight days following arriving in Europe. He returned back to his home in the United States for surgery, taking part in numerous UC Irvine games as a volunteer assistant coach. The next season, Murphy was signed by the Los Angeles Clippers at the beginning of the 1987-88 season replacement for Michael Cage, who was an outcast. Murphy was a part of the team for 19 minutes during the first session of the campaign, but was dismissed after Cage returned to the team. the team.

But we were right in the middle of the playoffs and I wanted to win the championship so badly… So I stayed.” He received invitations to tryouts for both Warriors as well as the Boston Celtics in the 1988 offseason, but he was not offered a regular-season deal by either team. Murphy played the 1988-89 campaign working on the court in Spain as a player for BBV Collado Villalba. Murphy played in all 36 games played by the team, scoring 18.6 scores and 9.5 rebound for 37.1 hours per match.

After being waived by Minnesota, Murphy joined the Houston Rockets for an offseason workout and signed with the team before the 1992–93 season began. However, early in his tenure with the team, he suffered a recurring hamstring injury, forcing him to miss most of the season. Murphy eventually recovered for the final two months of the season but never played a game for the Rockets as the team did not want to lose their chemistry. He earned $500,000 from his contract with Houston.
