Christopher D'Arcangelo is one of the most popular and richest American artist who was born on January 23, 1955 in Governors Island, New York, United States. Christopher D’Arcangelo (23 January 1955 – 28 April 1979) was an American artist who worked from the 1970s and died in 1979. He was a fervent advocate of anarchism. He was the father of American painting artist Allan D’Arcangelo.
Then, in January of 1977, the artist released his proposal “LAICA as an Alternative to Museums” in the journal of the closed Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art. In the latter part of the 1970s, D’Arcangelo worked with art-maker Peter Nadin, in a series of artworks (in in the shape of contracts and documents) that showcased their day-to-day work of rehabilitating loft spaces, mostly within Lower Manhattan, as “a means of surviving in a capitalist economy.” While the documentation in type that both artists distributed in circulars, contained an invitation to look at the final work, there was no claim was made that the result of their work, which they called “functional constructions”, represented artworks in the traditional sense.
The collaboration culminated in an evolving group exhibition at 84 West Broadway which opened on 9 November 1978. The exhibition began with a presentation of an empty exhibition space, entitled 30 Days Work, in reference to the amount of labor the two artists (along with fellow laborer Nick Lawson) had invested in refurbishing the space as a gallery. The first in a series of invitation cards announcing the exhibition was headed with the statement: “The work shown in this space is a response to the existing conditions and or work previously shown in the space.”
In 1991, the artist Christopher Williams produced a work Bouquet for Bas Jan Ader and Christopher D’Arcangeo… 1991. Further references to D’Arcangelo have been included in recent works by the artists Ben Kinmont and Mario García Torres.
Between 1976 and the time of his demise, he worked on an exhibit proposal in his museum, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.

The first act in the Whitney Museum, in February 1975 in the Whitney Biennial, consisted in attaching himself to an iron case and locking to the doors located at the main entrance to the museum. D’Arcangelo was chained to the door with his back visible to people who were descending on the ramp that leads to the museum’s entry point for about an hour, which impeded access to and exit from the museum. The gangster was also involved in two more rogue acts in the year 1976 in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA and, in 1978 in 1978, on in 1978, at the Louvre located in Paris.
He took part in an array of illegal acts in the most prestigious museum in New York City: the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum. Each of the actions was preceded by a written note written on his back that read: “When I state that I am an anarchist I must also state that I am not an anarchist to be in keeping with the […] definition of anarchism. Long live anarchism.” The words “anarchism” in the initial sentence as well as the entire next sentence was stenciled upside-down.
In September 1978, D’Arcangelo took part in a group exhibition, along with Louise Lawler, Adrian Piper and Cindy Sherman, curated by Janelle Reiring at Artists Space. This was the first exhibition to include Sherman’s acclaimed Untitled Film Stills. D’Arcangelo’s contribution took the form of a written statement, entitled “Four texts for Artists Space”. The texts were printed on four pages following the layout of the exhibition catalog and displayed on the gallery walls. It included a detailed description and critique of the status of Artists Space as an independent gallery, or “artists’ space” as its name implies. As a pendant to his critique, D’Arcangelo left his name off all promotional material destined to circulate outside the gallery. This included a blank space on the invitation card. Likewise, four blank pages were included in the catalog.
