Catherwood was one of 14 swimmers representing New Zealand at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States, and she was a participant in one event. At the age of 16, she was one of the most youthful New Zealand swimmer in Atlanta. Catherwood was part of a group along with Anna Wilson, Dionne Bainbridge along with Alison Fitch to compete in the 200-meter 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay. They finished sixth in their heat, but were not able to make it to the final. Their overall ranking was 11th among 21 teams. Catherwood has New Zealand Olympian number 698.
Catherwood started swimming aged eight and was a teen swimming sensation; as of 2011, one of her national age 13 records still stood. She was a member of Christchurch’s AquaGym Swim Club alongside Anna Simcic.
