Blythe was born in Geelong on February 24, 1962. He was raised on a farm in Derrinallum, a Victorian township called Derrinallum as well as a world-class Australian rules footballer as an teen. He was a participant for the Teal Cup and was later in the St Kilda Football Club country team. The year was 1981. He started studies in the Ballarat College of Advanced Education however, later in the year, he was injured in a three-car crash that left him paraplegic. In 1984, he earned his degree in physical education in time, despite a six-month rehab in Austin Hospital.

Blythe had also been a motivational and motivational speaker. He was involved in forming and working with numerous businesses that increased the public’s awareness of those handicapped. He also published his memoir Blythe Spirit.

Blythe was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1997 for his gold medal. The following year, Blythe won the Australian Sports Medal. It is the Sandy Blythe Medal, awarded to the top athlete of the season of the Australia wheelchair basketball national men’s team was named in honor of him. In 2010 he was posthumously admitted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.

Robert Alexander “Sandy” Blythe, OAM (24 February 1962 18 Nov in 2005) was an Australian wheelchair basketball player. He was diagnosed as paraplegic in the aftermath to a car crash in 1981. He then continued to play in the Australia wheelchair basketball national team in 4 Paralympic Games, captaining the gold medal-winning team in 1996’s Atlanta Paralympics. He committed suicide in the year 2005 at 43 years old after an extended illness.

He was a part of Australia men’s wheelchair basketball national team for the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona 1996 Atlanta and 1996 Atlanta, and the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. He was head of the team in 1996 when it took home a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games and was co-captain alongside Priya Cooper from the Australian Paralympic team at the 2000 Sydney Games. He was awarded the Australian Institute of Sport scholarship in 1998 to play wheelchair basketball.

On 18 November 2005, Blythe committed suicide; he had been suffering from depression and chronic fatigue syndrome for several years. He was survived by his partner of eight years, wheelchair basketballer Paula Coghlan.
