Rumi Verjee was born and raised in Uganda. He spent his childhood in Kenya, before moving to Britain. In 1972, Idi Amin took many of the Verjee’s family assets. He was educated at Haileybury College in Hertford and Downing College in Cambridge, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Law. After that, he was called to the Bar from Middle Temple.
Verjee, aged 27, approached Tom Monaghan during a conference in America and convinced him to sell the franchise rights to Domino’s Pizza UK. Verjee founded the British chain and it employs more than 20,000 people in the UK. Verjee sold his share in the company in 1989 and then went on to direct the development of Brompton Hospital. Verjee and Elton John co-owned Watford F.C. from 1993 to 1997. He bought Thomas Goode in 1995. Thomas Goode holds two royal warrants, and has more than 160 years of experience in iconic glassworks.
On 17 September 2013 he was created a life peer taking the title Baron Verjee, of Portobello in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
