The Cardinals drafted Green in the fourth round, 1979 NFL Draft. Green was a star as a rookie return kicks player, with a 106 yard return against the Dallas Cowboys that tied an NFL record. Green was also a solid cornerback. He was a part-time wide receiver in 1981 and gained 708 yards with 33 catches, nearly 21.5 yards per catch. Green was fully relegated to wide receiver the following season and did well in the short-strike season. Green shined in the following seasons, especially in 1984, when his 1,555 receiving yards was the third-highest in a single season (through 2005, this dropped to 18th). Green was the Cardinals’ leading receiver in 1984, 1988, and 1988. In the years that followed, veteran Pat Tilley, J. T. Smith, and Green split the time leading the team in receiving. His star status was rare in a team with mediocre players. His career saw the Cardinals reach the playoffs just once in 1982, during a strike that had resulted in only two wins.

After a pair of solid seasons in 1989-90, when the team had relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, Green was traded to Cleveland Browns in 1991. Green was released by the Browns before the regular season started. He was then signed to the Eagles. The Eagles were looking for veteran leadership at wide receiver to replace Mike Quick and Cris Carter. Green was a key player in that disappointing offense, which was balanced out by an outstanding defense. Green retired in 1993 after playing sparingly the next season. John Madden presented Green with an All-Madden Team award. He stated that Green was not the greatest wide receiver, but he considered him the best player. Green had 559 receptions, totalling 8,965 yards and scoring 66 touchdowns. Green also ran for 140 yards and returned 27 punts for 220 yards. Kickoff returns added 2,002 yards. He also intercepted four passes for 54 yards and recovered 20 fumbles. He gained 11,391 yards overall and scored 69 touchdowns.

On September 15, 2017 Green was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.
