Ronald McDonald Sinclair, a former professional soccer player from Scotland who was born 19 November 1964, is the goalkeeping coach at Port Vale.

Sinclair was out of favor and joined Chester City in August 1996 on a free transfer. Chester reached the Third Division playoffs after conceding only 43 goals between 1996 and 1997. Sinclair was voted Player of the Year. Sinclair missed 13 league games after Wayne Brown’s arrival, and the Blues lost to Swansea City. After a 5-0 defeat at Exeter City, Sinclair was not selected for the second time. Kevin Ratcliffe later announced that Sinclair’s contract would be terminated. Later, Sinclair played non-league football for Witton Albion and Leek Town.

In his 16-year career as a professional football player, he played in 275 league and cup games. He also spent spells on loan with Wrexham and Derby County, Sheffield United and Halifax Town. He was promoted to the Third Division in 1989-90 with Bristol City and the Second Division in 1992-93 with Stoke City. In 1996-97, Chester City’s Player Of The Season was his choice. Later, he was a coach at Stoke City and Aston Villa.

Sinclair was a Scottish youth and schoolboy player. He joined Nottingham Forest in 1982 as an apprentice at Stirling Boys Club. Sinclair signed professional forms in November 1982. Sinclair’s first Football League action came in 1983-84, when he was on loan with Wrexham Fourth Division side. He spent the next two seasons on loan with Derby County and Sheffield United, but did not make the first-team. Leeds took him on permanent basis in June 1986 for PS10,000. The following season, he made eight league appearances before joining Halifax Town twice on loan.

Sinclair made the move to Bristol City in September 1989. He helped them win promotion from Third Division during their first season at Ashton Gate. In the early stages 1991-92 campaign, Sinclair was again on loan. He spent time with Walsall and then began a five-year stint with Stoke City. This was in a PS25,000 transfer in November 1991. Sinclair was often in competition for Stoke’s goalkeeper’s shirt, but he played more than 20 matches during his three first seasons at the club.

Sinclair never played professionally again after leaving Chester and has spent most of his time working as goalkeeping coach with Stoke City, where he initially was registered again as a player. He became the assistant academy manager, before moving to become the academy goalkeeping coach at Aston Villa. He was appointed as goalkeeping coach at Port Vale by manager Neil Aspin in December 2017.
