He did not accept the offer because the focus was on athletics. He also played basketball and Badminton. Phiri was a graduate of Texas A&M University in May 2012, before moving in Orlando, Florida. The university was chosen by him to experience life-changing events. Phiri declared in an interview with the media in 2012 that his motivations for sports include Usain Bolt Yohan Blake as well as Tyson Gay. He was a former member of in the United Kingdom but switched to Zambia in 2009 and has dual citizenship in both countries.

In his junior year (2010) Phiri won the NCAA silver medal in the 60 meters , with an all-time best of 6.60 seconds. He also placed fourth in the 100m and 8th in 200 metres in the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Big 12 Conference meet he took home an Olympic gold medal for the 60 meters and the silver medal for the 60 meters in the indoor, and also won the bronze medal in the indoor 200 meters. In the same year Phiri participated as an integral part of the relay squad that set a new time record in the 200 metres 4 x to win the Texas relay title (one minute 22:31 seconds) and also clinched five wins in the 4 x 100 meters relay team. He ran an indoor best time of 20.87 seconds to win the Texas A&M Conference Challenge in his final year of collegiate athletics. Phiri was the winner of the 100-meter race in the race at the Texas Relays, with a record time for the event of 10 minutes and 6 seconds. Phiri competed in the 100m race during the 2010 World Championships in Athletics but failed to advance to the semi-finals of this event , after finishing sixth during his race.

Phiri later competed in the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships, and qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He was eliminated at the semi-final stage but competed strongly in events the following year. Phiri narrowly missed out on clinching a medal at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in the 60 metres, and withdrew from the African Championships in Athletics two years later because of an injury. He was unable to advance to the semi-finals of the 100 metres at the 2016 Summer Olympics after finishing fourth in his heat.

He was selected to represent Zambia at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Poland. Phiri won his heat in the 60 metres with a time of 6.59 seconds and was able to advance to the semi-finals of the event. He finished second in the third heat of the semi-finals, but narrowly missed out on achieving a medal by finishing fifth in the final with the same time as the third and fourth-place finishers. Phiri progressed to the final of the 100 metres in the 2016 African Championships in Athletics but withdrew due to an hip injury he sustained in the semi-finals of the event and was unable to participate in the 4 x 100 metres relay race. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he placed fourth with a time of 10.27 seconds in his heat of the 100 metres and did not qualify for the semi-finals. Phiri was the flag bearer for Zambia at the closing ceremony.

The first time he competed at the university (2008) Phiri finished in sixth place in the 60-metre race at the NCAA Indoors, and became the first male sprinter in the history of the Big 12 Conference to achieve 100-200 sprints in the conference competition. His accomplishments earned him his an All-American award. In the following year, Phiri played in the team which set the new Texas A&M time record in the 4 x 100 meter race, and also recorded the best time for 2009 at the collegiate level while doing it. He took part at the 4×200 meters event, along the other three competitors, and broke the record of 19 years ago. Phiri was a part of the international team for his sports debut during the World Championships in Athletics where Phiri finished 2nd in the heat of 100 metres , just behind Usain Bolt. Phiri was eliminated in the semi-final stage of the event and then pulled out of the event because of an injury.

Gerald Phiri (born 6 October 1988) is a Zambian sprinter who takes part in the 60 meters, 100 metres, and 200 metre races in both outdoor and indoor events. He began his athletic career during his school years and then continued his training as a student at Texas A&M University. He was the first sprinter to complete the 100-200 sprint double in the Big 12 Conference event and was awarded his an All-American award. Phiri made his international debut at his debut at the World Championship in Athletics where Phiri was eliminated in the semi-finals of 100 meters. He was awarded an Olympic silver medal in the 60 meters event in his second year at the university and was awarded three medals during the 2010 Big 12 Conference meet.
