Berteling was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on 6 September 1957. His family was very active in basketball and sports. At seven years old, he began ice skating. He also played tennis and football as a child. Because of its speed and desire to play in a team sport, he was drawn to ice hockey. Wayne Gretzky was one his first hockey idols.
From 2006 to 2011, Berteling was the Amsterdam Tigers’ head coach. From 2006 to 2011, Berteling was the Amsterdam Tigers’ head coach. He also won the sixth Dutch Cup in 2007. Later, he was the Amsterdam Capitals’ head coach from the 2011-12 season to the 2012-13 season and then the Amsterdam G’s for the 2012-13 season. He also coached the Amsterdam Tigers in the 2015-16 season. In 2016, he retired as a coach of professional hockey.
Berteling retired to live in Amsterdam with his wife. He has stated that, “Amsterdam is a big city, but unfortunately there is little to no hockey publicity”. He felt hockey teams should use social media to attract people to the game. In retirement from coaching, he has focused on teaching hockey at clinics, and worked a motivational speaker for sports teams. As of 2020, he was conducting training sessions for youths and adults in Alkmaar, and wanted to stay involved for the love of the game.
Berteling finished his career playing 213 games and scored 195 points for the Netherlands national team at World Championships, the Olympic Games and other international events. He holds the record of the most games played for the national team as of 2020. He scored more than 1,600 points and played over 900 career games combined in all levels of play, and appeared in 14 Ice Hockey World Championships. He was referred to as “Mister Ice Hockey” in the Netherlands, and was respected for his sportsmanship and was regularly among the least penalised players in the Netherlands.
Berteling switched teams in 1986 and won a second Eredivisie title as well as a Dutch Cup in Rotterdam in 1987. He was awarded the Frans Henrichs Cup and was named the Eredivisie’s most valuable player for the 1987-1988 season. He also won the Rotterdam Eredivisie title in 1989 and 1990, as well as two Dutch Cups (1990 and 1991). In 1995, he retired from professional hockey and returned to the Netherlands’ second division three years later. At 41 years old, he played in 11 Eredivisie games and was a participant in the 1999 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships. He was a part-time hockey player and occasional coach until 2013, playing a total 13 professional games.

Ron Berteling, a Dutch retired ice hockey coach and player, was born 6 September 1957. He was a representative of the Netherlands in ice hockey at 1980 Winter Olympics and was the captain of the national men’s ice hockey team for the Netherlands from 1982 to 1993. He was a part of 14 Ice Hockey World Championships and holds the record for 213 games played with the national team. He was a part of 26 seasons in the Eredivisie. This league is the Netherlands’ premier league for the Rotterdam Pandas and the Amsterdam Tigers. He was the league’s most valued player in the 1987-88 season. He won four Eredivisie titles and five Dutch Cups as both a player, and as a coach. In 1994, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau. He was also named Ron Berteling Schaal’s namesake in 2007. In 2020, he received the Torriani Award of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
Berteling began his professional hockey career at the age of 17, when he played in the Eredivisie, the Netherlands’ top league. This was during the 1974-75 season. He was 20 years old when he played his first Ice Hockey World Championships with the Netherlands men’s national ice hockey team. This saw him help his country move from Group C to group B. The following year, he returned to help the Netherlands get promoted again at the 1979 World Championships. They were moved from Group B into Group A and qualified for ice hockey at 1980 Winter Olympics. In 1980, he won his first Dutch Cup with Amsterdam as a player. In 1982, he was elected captain of the Netherlands national soccer team and remained in that position until 1993. He won the Eredivisie in 1982 and another Dutch Cup in 1985 while playing on Amsterdam.
Berteling became the first Dutch hockey player to be knighted in the Netherlands, when he received the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1994. The Netherlands Ice Hockey Association established the Ron Berteling Schaal in 2007 named after him. It is a cup competition played as the first game of a season, between the winner of the previous Eredivisie season and the reigning Dutch Cup champion. On 4 February 2020, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) named him that year’s recipient of the Torriani Award, for an ice hockey player with an “outstanding career from non-top hockey nation”. The formal presentation will be on the final day of the 2020 IIHF World Championship in Zürich. Berteling will be the first Dutch person to received the Torriani Award.
