Rod Langway is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on May 3, 1957 in Taipei, Taiwan. Rodney Cory Langway, born May 3, 1957, is an American former professional hockey defenseman. He played for the Montreal Canadiens (NHL), Washington Capitals (WHA), and Birmingham Bulls (WHA). Langway was also a player-coach for teams in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), after his NHL career ended. Langway, a two-time winner of James Norris Memorial Trophy for the NHL’s top defenseman, was elected to Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.

Langway was the NHL’s top defensiveman in 1983 and 1984, winning the Norris Trophy. Langway was the first American NHL All-Star since Frank Brimsek, 1948. He received two All-Star First Team First Team selections as well as one Second Team selection as defenseman. Langway was second to Wayne Gretzky in 1984 for the Hart Memorial Trophy. Langway was also part the NHL All-Star hockey team that played the Soviet national hockey teams in Rendez-Vous ’87. Langway, who retired from the NHL in 1993 was the last active player to win a Stanley Cup during the late-70s dynasty of the Montreal Canadiens. He represented the United States at the 1984, 1987, and 1987 Canada Cups as well as in the 1982 Ice Hockey World Championship tournaments.

Langway’s jersey number (#5) was retired by the Washington Capitals on November 26, 1997, and he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999. His career was crowned with his election to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2012, he was inducted into the World Hockey Association Hall of Fame in the “Legends of the Game” category.

Langway was also an assistant coach under Tom McVie with the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins during the 1997–98 season. He played in ten games that year to assist with on-ice development, during which time he was not granted an exemption to play without a helmet. Providence finished with a mere 19 victories that season, and Langway did not return the following year after McVie was reassigned to be a scout by the Boston organization.

Langway, a left-handed player, was drafted in 1977 by the Montreal Canadiens and the Birmingham Bulls of WHA. Langway played for the Bulls from 1977 to 1978, before joining the Canadiens in 1978-79 for the NHL season. He would go on to win the Stanley Cup that season. He was a Montreal player until he was traded by the Washington Capitals to begin the 1982-83 season. Langway was traded to the Capitals by the Canadiens for Doug Jarvis, Craig Laughlin and Brian Engblom. This trade not only saved the team from having to move out of D.C. but also provided them with the necessary equipment for a long string of postseason appearances. The Capitals reached the postseason every year Langway was with them, despite not reaching the playoffs in eight of their eight seasons in the league. The Capitals traded Langway to them, and he was named their captain for the next 11 seasons, until Langway retired from the NHL.
