Five books have been written by Wright: The Three Scientists and their Gods: Searching for Meaning in an Age of Information (1988), The moral animal (1994), Nonzero, The Logic of Human Destiny (1999), The Evolution of God (2009 and 2017). Wright is currently a visiting professor of science and religion at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Wright is co-founder, editor-in chief of Bloggingheads.tv, and founder and editor in-chief at Meaningoflife.tv.
Wright, blogger Mickey Kaus and Greg Dingle created Bloggingheads.tv on November 1, 2005. It is a diavlog about current events. The Bloggingheads diavlogs can be viewed online via webcam or downloaded as WMV, MP4 or MP3 video files. The archived diavlogs will be posted about 5-10 times per week. Many diavlogs are hosted by Wright. However, Bloggingheads.tv also hosts Glenn Loury and John McWhorter, Bill Scher and Kat Rosenfield. Phoebe Maltz–Bovy and Aryeh Cohen–Wade are other hosts.
Wright served as a Senior Editor at The Sciences and The New Republic, and as an editor at The Wilson Quarterly. He has been a contributing editor at The New Republic (where he also co-authored the “TRB” column), Time, and Slate, and has written for The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. He contributes frequently to The New York Times, including a stint as guest columnist for the month of April, 2007 and as a contributor to The Opinionator, a web-only opinion page in 2010. Wright became a senior editor of The Atlantic on January 1, 2012. As of February, 2015, the magazine’s author page describes him as “a former senior editor at The Atlantic.”
Wright began video-on-Internet in 2002 with MeaningofLife.tv, a website developed by Greg Dingle. In it, he interviews various thinkers about their views on science, philosophy and meditation. Slate magazine sponsors Meaningoflife.tv, which is made possible by funding from the Templeton Foundation. John Horgan, Daniel Kaufman and Nikita Petrov are the other hosts.

Wright was born in Lawton in Oklahoma to a Southern Baptist couple and raised in San Francisco. Wright, a self-described “Army brat”, attended Texas Christian University for one year in the late 70s. He then transferred to Princeton University to study sociobiology. This was an early precursor to evolutionary psychology. Wright was influenced by John McPhee’s style while at college, who is the author of Three Scientists and Their Gods, Looking for Meaning in an Age of Information.
Wright began teaching in 2000 at Princeton University and University of Pennsylvania. He taught a graduate seminar entitled “Religion and Human Nature” and an undergrad course called “The Evolution of Religion”. Wright, a Laurence S. Rockefeller Fellow at Princeton, began teaching a graduate seminar on the biological basis for moral intuition with Peter Singer. Wright led a Coursera MOOC for six weeks on Buddhism and Modern Psychology in 2014. Wright is currently a visiting professor of science and religion at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Wright is also a Senior Fellow at New America.
