She was awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Kavli Science Journalism award in the magazine category for Crisis in the Caves, a piece on white-nose syndrome in bats. Nijhuis was raised in Poughkeepsie (New York). In 1996, she graduated from Reed College. She began working as an intern at High Country News in Paonia, Colorado in January 1998. Today Nijhuis serves as the magazine’s Contributing editor. Nijhuis is also the Smithsonian magazine’s Contributing Writer. She has published in Orion, Nature, Scientific American and Scientific American among other publications. Reed College was her alma mater and she delivered the 2008 commencement speech.
Nijhuis was awarded the 2006 Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism by the American Geophysical Union, a 2006 AAAS Science Journalism Award in small newspaper categories; the Media Award of the American Institute of Biological Sciences and three additional awards of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Nijhuis was a finalist in the National Academies Communication Award.
With journalist Thomas Hayden, Nijhuis is the co-editor of The Science Writers’ Handbook, released in spring 2013. Nijhuis blogs regularly at The Last Word on Nothing.
