Most well-known is his 1997 win of the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race together with Phil Stubbs, which saw him set a new world record of 41 days, 2 hours, and 5 minutes. Both Hamill and Stubbs were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1999 for their services to ocean rowing. However, Stubbs was killed in a plane accident before the honours were announced. Hamill wrote The Naked Rower, a book that details this experience. Hamill managed the New Zealand teams that won the races in 2001 and 2003.
Hamill achieved a world record on an indoor rowing machine, and established and co-organises The Great Race. He also set up a trans-Tasman race in 2008, which he hopes to become biennial, and manages rowing teams.
Hamill was a candidate at the 2008 general election for the Green Party. However, he was not elected. His oldest brother, Kerry, was imprisoned and killed by members of the Khmer Rouge in 1978, after straying into Cambodian waters. Rob testified in court against the leader of the prison, Duch, in 2009.
Hamill was awarded a Silver medal at the 1994 World Rowing Championships held at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, United States. He shared the light-weight double sculls with Mike Rodger. Hamill was also a participant in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics for New Zealand.

Robert Miles Hamill MNZM, also known as Robbie Hamill (born 4/1/1964), is an ex-new Zealander rower and politician. In 1994, he was awarded a silver medal at the World Rowing Championships. In 1997, he won the first Atlantic Rowing Race.
Hamill’s older brother Kerry was on a trip between Bangkok and Singapore. He was captured by the Khmer Rouge and tortured. Kerry died in S-21 prison in 1978. At the time of his death, he was 28 years old. Hamill was just 14 years old when he heard about his brother’s death. John Hamill, Hamill’s older brother, committed suicide after learning of his brother’s death. Hamill, the prison leader, testified in July 2009 against Duch in the Extraordinary Chambers in Cambodia. Kerry Hamill was being tried for premeditated and crimes against humanity. Hamill described the experience as “very scary” and “an occasion to find [information] out”, but he stated that he was against the death penalty and didn’t want to see Duch executed. He also said that forty years imprisonment would be an ideal sentence, “anything less would be a victory for the [Duch] defense team, I suspect.”
Hamill stood in the Taranaki-King Country electorate in the 2008 New Zealand general election for the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, and at 56 on the Green party list. He came third, with 8.41% of the vote, and losing to the incumbent, National’s Shane Ardern. However, he stated that his intention was not to win the seat, and did not “think that would be realistic.” but campaigned for the Green party vote. Hamill describes the Green Party as “the only party with a commitment to driving policy towards a sustainable future”.
