Baarts, an active United States Soccer Federation member, is a holder of an “A” license and has coached youth soccer age divisions at the FC Portland Academy since 2004. The women’s team advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for a fourth year.
Rob Baarts grew up in Surrey, British Columbia and attended college at the University of Portland. He spent four seasons on the Pilot’s soccer team under coach Clive Charles. When he finished his career at Portland, he had 29 goals and 14 assists. Baarts’ highlight with the Pilots came in 1988 when he, Scott Benedetti and Kasey Keller took Portland to the NCAA Final Four where they lost to eventual champions Indiana University.
Baarts also played professionally in the Portland Pride of Continental Indoor Soccer League, (CISL), and with the Utah Freezz and Portland Pythons of the World Indoor Soccer League. He was a CISL All Star for the Pride in 1995. After the collapse of the CISL, the Edmonton Drillers (National Professional Soccer League) selected Baarts for the dispersal draft in 1997. He did not sign with Drillers. He signed with the Premier Soccer Alliance’s Portland Pythons in 1998. However, Tatu collided with him during a game against the Dallas Sidekicks. A season-ending injury resulted from the collision. Baarts was drafted by the expansion St. Louis Steamers in the spring 2000. He was then traded to the Utah Freezz for future considerations. He was named the 2000 WISL Defensive player of the year. Baarts was a member of the Portland Timbers, USL First Division in 2001. After impressing the coaches during the preseason, Baarts was hurt. He was released by the Timbers before he could play a game with them.
