He started his own business selling greeting cards and raised enough money to win a scholarship to the University of Virginia in 1981. He studied Biophysics and Chemical Engineering in college. While there, he supported himself by creating campus posters, greeting cards, T-shirts and T-shirts for students. He was also an officer for the Virginia chapter of Delta Upsilon fraternity and served on the University of Virginia Honor Council. An engineering professor criticised Gerber’s excessive doodling in lab notes. Gerber enrolled in fiction writing class his final year to earn his only A+ grade in college. He wrote his first story, A Fishing Day Korrespondence, for his writing class. It was later published in The Virginia Quarterly Review in 1985. Gerber didn’t write another piece of fiction until twenty years later.

In 2010 Gerber wrote the sequel Killer Virus, published only in German under the Heyne imprint. Gerber wrote his anthology, “First Thrills: High-Octane Stories from the Hottest Thriller Authors” which was published internationally by Forge, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers.
