He is currently playing for the Texas Stars in American Hockey League (AHL), as a prospect to join the Dallas Stars of National Hockey League. He played previously for the Fargo Force of United States Hockey League (USHL) and college ice hockey at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Dallas Stars drafted Tufte in the 25th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

After his junior college season, Tufte signed a 3-year entry-level contract with Dallas Stars on April 17.

Tufte was a Blaine High School player in Minnesota. He won the 2015-16 Mr. Hockey Award for his senior year, after leading all of Minnesota Class A in goals. Tufte also played for the Fargo Force in the USHL for two seasons, scoring 19 points in 34 games. He then decided to return to high school to finish his senior year. Tufte was invited by Team USA to the 2016 National Junior Evaluation Camp. He was there to prepare for 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. However, he injured his wrist and couldn’t play. Tufte was the Fargo Force’s highest NHL draft pick, and he was selected in the first round in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Tufte chose to continue his education at the University of Minnesota Duluth instead of making a move immediately.
