Florida, born November 26, 1957 in Newark (New Jersey), is an American urbanist who focuses on economic and social theory. He is the head of the Martin Prosperity Institute at The University of Toronto, and a Distinguished Fellow at NYU’s School of Professional Studies.

Florida’s concept of the creative classes and their implications for urban renewal is his most well-known contribution. Florida was a pioneer in urban regeneration and his best-selling books The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) and Cities and the Creative Class (2002) were some of the most popular. He later published a book titled Who’s Your City that focuses on issues related to urban renewal and talent migration.

Thomas Frank criticizes Florida’s “creative class” formulation as one of “several flattering ways of describing the professional cohort,” this particular one being “the most obsequious designation of them all.” Frank places the creative class within a broader critique of the Democratic Party: “Let us be clear about the political views Florida was expounding here. The problem with, say, George W. Bush’s administration was not that it favored the rich; it was that it favored the wrong rich—the ‘old-economy’ rich…. Florida wept for unfairly ignored industries, but he expressed little sympathy for the working people whose issues were now ignored by both parties.”

The Rise of the Creative Class was Florida’s book. It was published in 2002, just after the end of the dotcom boom. The book was then followed by Cities and the Creative Class which offered more detailed data to support Florida’s findings.

Florida received a B.A. from Rutgers College in 1979. He is a political scientist. Columbia University was where he completed his M.Phil in urban planning. He received his Ph.D. in 1986 and 1984.
