Richard Alley is one of the most popular and richest Glaciologist who was born on August 18, 1957 in Ohio, United States. Richard Blane Alley, born 18 August 1957, is an American geologist. He is also the Evan Pugh Professor in Geosciences at Pennsylvania State University. He is a refereed scientist who has published more than 240 publications on the relationship between Earth’s cryosphere, global climate change and other topics.

In 2005, Alley received the Seligman Crystal “for his extraordinary contribution to our understanding the stability of the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets, as well as erosion and sedimentation caused by this moving Ice.” Alley is among several Penn State earth scientists that contributed to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This panel shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Al Gore.

In 2008 Alley was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010.

Alley gave the Bjerknes lecture to the 2009 American Geophysical Union meeting titled “The biggest control knob- Carbon Dioxide in Earth’s climate history”. A video of the presentation is available (also available on YouTube).

He was also the first to be awarded the Louis Agassiz medal in 2005 for his “outstanding, sustained contribution to glaciology” and his effective communication of scientific issues in public policy. He was cited for his award as “He is inventive, sharp, and funny and remains a thorn on the backside of Bush administration.”

Vice President Al Gore invited Alley to testify on climate change in 1999. He did so before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in 2003, and again before the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology (2007 and 2010).
