Snipes was the Chicago Golden Gloves Champion in 1977 and 1978. In 1978 Intercity matches between Chicago and New York Golden Glove winner, Snipes lost in the first round to Eddie Gregg, a future heavyweight competitor.

Holmes rose at the count 4 and, though he was badly injured, he fought against the charging Snipes the rest of the round. After the Holmes fight, Snipes faced a number of top-notch fighters in a series of bouts that turned into highly entertaining brawls. His record was 39 wins (22 by knockout), 8 loses, and 1 draw. He fought Trevor Berbick and Gerrie Coetzee as well as Tim Witherspoon and Greg Page.
