Rainer Blatt is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on September 8, 1952 in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. Rainer Blatt, a German-Austrian experimental scientist, was born 8 September 1952. His research focuses on quantum optics, and quantum information. His team conducted one of the first experiments to Teleport Atoms. The other was performed at NIST Boulder Colorado. Nature published the reports from both of these groups back-to-back.
In 1994, Blatt was elected to the University of Gottingen’s chair in Physics. The following year, he was awarded the chair in Experimental Physics at the University of Innsbruck. From 2000 to 2013, Blatt was the head of the Institute for Experimental Physics. He is also a member the academic senate. Blatt was also the Scientific Director of the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Blatt is a member on the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Council.
In 2020 Rainer Blatt received an honorary doctorate from the Complutense
University of Madrid. He was the 2015 winner of the John Stewart Bell Prize
for Research on Fundamental Issues in Quantum Mechanics and their
Applications. In 2014 he received the Science Award of the State of Tyrol, in
2013 an Alexander von Humboldt Research Award of the Humboldt Foundation, and
in 2012 the Stern-Gerlach Medal. In 2009 he was awarded the Carl-Zeiss-
Research Award and 2008 an ERC Advanced Grant by the European Research
Council. He also received the Kardinal-Innitzer-Prize. In 2007 Blatt and his
European project partners were nominated by the European Commission for the
Descartes Prize. In 2006 he received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize of the
Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 1997 he won the Innovations Award of the
Tiroler Sparkasse for new ideas on quantum information processing.
Since 2008 Rainer Blatt is full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He
was elected a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences in
April 2019. In 2020 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Spanish Royal
Academy of Sciences
Rainer Blatt, an experimental physicist, has pioneered groundbreaking experiments in the areas of quantum metrology, precision spectroscopy and quantum information processing. He manipulates atoms trapped in ion traps with laser beams. Based on the suggestions of Peter Zoller and Ignacio Cirac in the mid-1990s, this work was completed. Their suggested setup was used by Blatt’s group and a team from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Boulder, Colorado. In 2004, they succeeded in transferring quantum information of an atom to another atom. This was called teleportation. These independently conducted experiments were published in Nature science journal and featured prominently on the cover. Three particles were placed in an ion trap during that experiment. Rainer Blatt’s group managed to control eight atoms in controlled fashion two years later. This is another step towards the creation of a quantum byte (qubyte), which is considered a first step in the quest for a quantum computer. Blatt is also well-known for his support of young scientists. Six of his former assistants (Christoph Becher and Jurgen Eschner; Hartmut Haffner; Dietrich Leibfried; Piet O. Schmidt and Ferdinand Schmidt- Kaler), have been promoted to chairs at universities around the world.
