They assigned him to the AHL on October 3, and the Minnesota Wild claimed him off waivers the following day. He was a free agent again after he played the entire season there.
On August 23, 2008, Robitaille returned to Europe and signed as a free agent to a three-year contract with Swiss team HC Lugano. After a disappointing campaign in 2008-09, Robitaille rebounded nicely in 2009-10, becoming the league’s top scorer. However, following a poor playoff performance in which HC Lugano was swept in the first round, Robitaille was informed in April 2010 he was no longer in the Club’s future plans, despite him being under contract for the 2010-11 season.
On July 7, 2001, the Los Angeles Kings signed him free of charge. He was claimed by Pittsburgh Penguins off waivers midway through the season. He played two seasons in Pittsburgh, but he never saw the full season. The Penguins traded him to New York Islanders for a draft pick on March 9, 2003. After completing his season with the Islanders, he was not resigned and became an unrestricted, free agent. He signed a contract on August 12, 2003 that brought him back to the Atlanta Thrashers.

Robitaille was first noticed while playing for Ottawa Jr. Senators of CJHL. Although he wasn’t drafted by any NHL team, he was offered a scholarship to Miami University based on his offensive numbers. He was signed by the Boston Bruins, NHL on March 17, 1997 after two solid seasons at Miami. After only playing one game in college, he was signed by the Boston Bruins of the NHL on March 17, 1997. He played the next two seasons with the Providence Bruins AHL affiliate while also playing some games for the Bruins. He was also instrumental in helping Providence win the Calder Cup in 1998-99, winning the Les Cunningham Award for league MVP.
The Bruins traded Robitaille for Peter Ferraro to the Atlanta Thrashers on June 25, 1999. He was not able to stay long in Atlanta as the Bruins traded him to Atlanta Thrashers for Peter Ferraro on June 25, 1999. On August 16, 1999, they traded him to Nashville Predators for Denny Lambert. On July 4, 2006, Robitaille signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. He returned to the Islanders on December 20, 2006 along with a fifth round draft pick for Mike York. When unsigned at the beginning of the 2007–08 season, he chose to sign to play in Russia. After several games, he resigned from the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team and was signed by the Ottawa Senators on October 16, 2007 for one season.
