He moved to Miami with his family as a child. Ortega was a high school football player for Nick Kotys of Coral Gables High School, Coral Gables, Florida. He also served as a shot-put specialist on their track and field teams. His Coral Gables Cavaliers football teammates, Neal Colzie, defensive back, and Glenn Cameron (fullback-linebacker), were both first-round 1975 NFL Draft picks by the Oakland Raiders, and Cincinnati Bengals, respectively.

Ortega had a six-year career as a professional football player in the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons selected him in the second round, twenty-ninth overall, of the 1975 NFL Draft. In 1977, he was a starting linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons. He was also a crucial part of the “Grits Blitz”, a renowned defense that featured the Falcons. He was then relegated in 1978 to special teams. In 1979, he was traded to Miami Dolphins in exchange for a future third round draft pick. In 1980, he finished his NFL career in the Dolphins. Ortega was a part of eighty-one regular season NFL games and intercepted five passes. He also recovered seven fumbles.

In 2007, thirty-six years after he graduated from high school, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) recognized Ortega as one of the “100 Greatest Players of the First 100 Years” of Florida high school football.

His son Buck went on to play in the NFL as well. Most notably, Buck played on the New Orleans Saints in 2010, the year they won the Super Bowl.

Ortega completed his four-season college career in the fourth season with 357 tackles and twelve forced fumbles (12 of which were recovered), as well as five interceptions. In 1973 and 1974, Ortega was selected for the first-team All-Southeastern Conference selections. He was also a 1974 All-American and Academic All-American. He was also named team captain in his senior year. In 1976, he graduated from Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Management. He was also inducted into The University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978 as a “Gator Great”. The Sun sports editors ranked him No. 40 players were among the 100 most important in the first century of Florida Gators football.

Ralph Ortega, born July 6, 1953, is an American former professional and college football player. He was a linebacker for the National Football League (NFL), for six seasons between the 1970s-early 1980s. Ortega was a college football player for the University of Florida and received All-American recognition. He was a second-round draft pick in 1975 NFL Draft. He played professionally for the Atlanta Falcons, and the Miami Dolphins of NFL.

Ortega was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida to Gainesville, Florida. He played linebacker on Doug Dickey’s Florida Gators football teams from 1971 to 1974. In 1973, Ortega helped the Gators defeat the Auburn Tigers in 14 visits at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Ortega’s great play was a crushing tackle which caused Chris Linderman, Auburn’s tailback, to fumble at the Gators’ 5 yard line just before halftime. Auburn scored just a few seconds before the end and the Gators won the game 12-8. After the game, Doug Dickey, the Gators’ coach was taken off the field by his players. It was hailed as “one of the greatest moments Florida Gators football history.”

Ortega’s son, Buck Ortega, played college football for the Miami Hurricanes as a quarterback and tight end from 2001 to 2004, after winning the Florida Class 2A state high school football championship as the quarterback for Gulliver Preparatory School in 2000. Ortega served as an assistant coach for his son’s Gulliver Prep team, and had a close mentor relationship with future NFL star defensive back Sean Taylor, one of his son’s Gulliver Prep teammates and close friends.
