Polin Belisle Biography

Polin Belisle is one of the most popular and richest Athletics Competitor who was born on July 2, 1966 in Honduras, Belize. Apolinario Belisle Gomez, born July 2, 1966, is a former marathon runner. He was a representative of Belize at the 1988 Olympic Games. He was also scheduled to represent Honduras in 1992 Olympic Games. However, he still participated in the marathon.

Belisle applied for the Honduras to compete under the name Apolineria Belisle. Belisle stated to the Honduras Olympic Committee he was born in Honduras, moved to the United States at six years old and that he also competed in the 1988 Olympics for Belize. Belisle also spoke of his experience at the Los Angeles Marathon, which was faster than any Honduran athletes had ever run. Belisle offered to cover his travel costs to the Games. Belisle took an oath on July 15 to the Honduras Olympic Team and was then entered to compete at the 1992 Olympics in the marathon, 10,000m and 5,000m. Belisle was noticed on July 29 by the Belize Olympic Team, who in turn informed Ned Pitts (president of the Belizean Olympic Committee). Belisle was reported to the Honduras Olympic Committee. He was then removed from the team and thrown out the Olympic Village. However, he retained his identity card, race number, and passport. Belisle was able to run the marathon with the leaders the first mile, before dropping back. He didn’t finish the race. It is believed that he was the first unauthorized runner to compete in the Olympics since 1984 when Margaret de Jesus competed in the qualifying heat for the 4x400m race.

Belisle broke the Belize half-marathon time record in April 1990 by running the Belize City marathon in 1:13:30. Belisle was disqualified in 1991 from the Long Beach Marathon because CCTV footage failed to capture him during the middle part of the race. He had previously finished fifth. Belisle was also disqualified for the 1992 Los Angeles Marathon in which he had placed 20th.
