His university undergraduate studies began in 1975 at the Mannes School of Music followed by New York University, and later postgraduate diploma completion in Global Business at the University of Oxford. While at Mannes he also studied poetry and creative writing with Henry Shapiro at Marymount College in New York City.
The jazz tune Notre Amour with lyrics by Peter Shaindlin and Dawn Herron and arrangements with Grammy Award winner Bill Cunliffe is featured for the album 2017 Na Hoku Hanohano Jazz Album of the Year “Between The moon and music’ (June 2016) featuring Maggie Herron. In 2016, he founded an ensemble of musicians who experiment that combines the jazz genre and that of other styles, called ‘Drift which is based within Honolulu, Hawaii, which includes the musicians T’altosh, an electric guitarist, Will DiMartino on drums along with Ryan Lee Videgaard on acoustic bass. The classical trumpet lessons he received at the Mannes School of Music in the late 1970s included William Vacchiano, Melvyn Broiles and Murray Karpilovsky, along with further instruction of the jazz genre from Eddie Barefield, Tommy Turrentine, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and Danny Stiles.
Shaindlin has played an active role in the arts and culture community in Hawaii and abroad for more than a decade, facilitating philanthropic efforts and initiatives through the encouragement of partnerships between arts and culture institutions. He spearheaded Halekulani Corporation’s arts and culture partnerships including ʻIolani Palace, Hawaii Symphony, the Bishop Museum and Hawaii POPS, Chamber Music Hawaii, Hawaii Theatre, Hawaii Opera Theater, University of Hawaii, Pacific New Media, Hawaii Book & Music Festival, Honolulu Museum of Art, Liljestrand House, Shangri La (Doris Duke) and title sponsorship of the Hawaii International Film Festival. For these efforts, Halekulani Corporation was a 2017 recipient of the BCA-10 Awards of America for the Arts in Washington, DC.
One of six male siblings, Shaindlin is a son of Jack Shaindlin, the iconic late film composer and 20th Century Fox musical director. He has two daughters, Valerie Brett Shaindlin and Lana ‘Svetlana’ Sophia Shaindlin, and a son, Jack Henry Seitz Shaindlin. His brother, Timothy Joseph Shaindlin, is the noted opera coach, conductor, operatic translator and linguist at Yale Opera, Yale University.
There are four books he has published through Deuxmers LLC: the novella Citizen Steele (based on the Tractatus of Ludwig Wittgenstein), and three volumes of poetry 18 Passions, Joys and Sorrows and The Swans of Pergusa. Shaindlin’s most recent book, ‘Ravens and Nights’ collection of poems written between the years of 2016 through 2017, is scheduled to be published in 2019. Shaindlin was the featured writer during the 2017 Hawaii Book & Music Fair where he gave a lecture on his knowledge of the western poetic canon and read a selection of poems of Clare, MacNeice, Lucretius, Yeats, Rexroth, Mallarme, Kingston and Neruda in addition to writing his own. He worked with Omer Kursat in the translations of some Turkish poetry written by ‘Second-New poets for the publication Keep the Change. Keep the Change, published in December of 2018 through Deuxmers Publishing LLC.
