Gibbs graduated from University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1979, with an honours diploma from the departments of Physics as well as Geography. He joined the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge. He was employed in the British Halley Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf for two years starting in October 1979, where he conducted regular observations of the weather and assisted in maintaining the base.
Peter John Gibbs (born 1958) is a former BBC Weather forecaster, who often appeared in BBC News, BBC World News and BBC Radio, particularly BBC Radio Four. He was previously a part of the BBC News at One, BBC News at Six, BBC News at Ten and BBC Breakfast. He quit the BBC on December 9, 2016.
His TV debut as a forecaster came from the BBC’s Look East in 1993, and then he transferred to the BBC Weather Centre to join the BBC World team in October 1997. Forecasting began for the other BBC channels in the month of November 1998, and broadcasts across every one of the BBC channels. He is often the host of Gardeners’ Question Time on Radio 4. He hosted his final weather report for the day on BBC Radio 4 on Friday 9 December 2016.

When he returned to UK after May of 1982, he was a part of the Met Office where he spent one year as a weather forecaster in the training. He worked for several years forecasting in RAF Honington in Suffolk and on Benbecula Island in the Outer Hebrides, where he forecasted to the Army missile range on South Uist before moving to the Norwich Weather Centre in 1989.
He is a cyclist, walker along with sailing and spending time with his loved ones. He got married Susan Hollands in June 1988 in Cambridge and they have two children: a son (born in September 1990) and a daughter (born in May 1993). He was appointed the honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Leeds in July 2018.
