In 2010 Pernilla Wittung Stafshede was one of ten researchers from Sweden that was named an Wallenberg Scholar, with a five-year grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

In 2017 she was elected a member of the council of Biophysical Society (BPS). It was the second time ever for a Swedish scientist; the first one was Arne Engström 1960–1963.
Since 2008, the professor came back to Sweden for a professorship in Umea University. Since September of 2015 she is an instructor in the department of Chemistry at Chalmers University of Technology and is head for the Chemical Biology division. She is the head of a research team that studies biological properties and biophysical characteristics of protein, including metal- transporting proteins as well as proteins that fold in a wrong way and form clumps. The study is basic science, yet it has connections to various diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and even cancer.
