Pekka Rautakallio (born on July 25 1953) is an Finnish former professional ice hockey defenseman and coach. He was a part of 14 seasons of elite hockey in the SM -sarja and SM -liiga in the years 1968-87 with Assat in addition to HIFK Helsinki. During this time, the five times he was a Finnish All-Star. Rautakallio was a part of the Assat championship team that took home the Kanada-malja trophy in 1978. He was voted the best defenseman in the SM-liiga between 1978 and 1979, and 1986. The league then gave this award as the Pekka Rautakallio Trophy in his honor. On the international stage, Rautakallio played with the Finnish national team at the seven World Championships and two Canada Cup tournaments.
Rautakallio was back in Assat the club that had joined the newly formed SM- liiga and established himself as one of the top defencemen within the league. He was awarded the defensive player of the season both in 1977-78 as well as 1978-79. SM-liiga eventually awarded the honour the Pekka Rautakallio award in his honor. He scored 37 points in 36 games during 1977-78 and then increased his score to score 25 scores and 54 points in the next year. Assat earned its spot as the top team in the SM-liiga by winning the Kanada-malja champions in 1978, and making it to the final in 1979.
The 1981–82 season was Rautakallio’s best in the NHL. He again led the team’s defencemen in scoring, and was fourth overall, with 68 points in 80 games. He played for the Campbell Conference team at the 1982 All-Star Game, and in doing so became the first Finn in NHL history to appear in the mid-season contest. However, he opted to return to Finland after the season as his sons were beginning school. He feared they were becoming too Canadian and wanted them to grow up in his homeland.
Rautakallio returned to play for HIFK, instead of Ässät, and served for a while as the captain of HIFK. Rautakallio retired from playing in 1989 after two seasons with SC Rapperswil-Jona in Switzerland.

In 1979, he returned for the Atlanta Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL) for one season, before moving to Canada as a franchise player and playing in two more seasons with the Calgary Flames. Rautakallio participated during the 1982 NHL All-Star Game, making the first Finnish NHL player to be a part of the event. Pekka Rautakallio started his Ice hockey career with the his local club in his hometown, Assat in 1970. He also played for the club’s football team. Being a mobile and skilled defensive player, Rautakallio was soon noticed and was a part of his first International event in 1972.
Rautakallio was the focus to World Hockey Association (WHA) officials after the 1974 Summit Series team played an game with The Finnish nation’s team. In 1974, the Phoenix Roadrunners thought to sign the Finnish player to a contract in at the time, but they stayed away because they were afraid that the task of being a Finn adapting to the life in Arizona on his own be too difficult. They took him on next year together with his fellow countryman Lauri Mononen and both signed two-year contracts. Rautakallio had 50 points, with 11 goals in the years 1975-76. He was the top scorer among defencemen who were rookies and was ranked fifth overall of all defencemen. Then, he dropped to 35 points in the 1976-77 season. The Roadrunners stopped operations after the season. Without alternatives for North America, Rautakallio returned to Finland.
The Atlanta Flames brought Rautakallio back to North America in 1979 as general manager Cliff Fletcher signed him to a National Hockey League (NHL) contract. The Flames were impressed with the power of his shot and his speed; he finished his first NHL season with 30 points. Rautakallio relocated with the franchise when it moved to Canada and became the Calgary Flames in 1980–81. He led the team in scoring by a defenceman with 56 points.
