He participated in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers, Atlanta Thrashers as well as the Florida Panthers. The current position is a coach for development of the New Jersey Devils.

On July 1st, 2008 Rissmiller was signed as a no-cost agent to a three-year $3 million contract for the New York Rangers. Rissmiller began the 2008-09 season as a player for the Rangers and suffered a calf injury in his Rangers debut with a 4-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 11 the 11th of October, 2008. Not being able to secure a roster spot following his recuperation He played only two games for New York before he was given a conditioning assignment to the Wolf Pack’s AHL affiliate of the Hartford Wolf Pack Hartford Wolf Pack on November 12 in 2008. After having completed his assignment and not having a role with the Rangers and the Wolf Pack, he was transferred with the Wolf Pack for the duration of the season on the 2nd of December 2008. In the 64 games he played with Hartford the team, he placed third on the team scoring charts with assists with 54 and 54.

On August 2, 2010, Rissmiller’s disappointing tenure with the Rangers concluded when he was traded, along with Donald Brashear, to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for center Todd White. Failing to make the Thrasher’s roster prior to the 2010–11 season, Rissmiller was again demoted to the AHL to affiliate, the Chicago Wolves for the last year of his contract. Due to the Wolves exceeding number of veteran players, Rissmiller was limited to 6 games with the Wolves before on November 20, 2010, Rissmiller was reassigned by the Thrashers to the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL, marking a return to Cleveland from his previous four-year tenure with the Barons. On December 3, 2010, Rissmiller set a franchise record for the Monsters for most goals in a game with 4.

On July 12, 2011, Rissmiller signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche, the NHL affiliate of Lake Erie. In a season blighted by injury, Rissmiller was unable to earn a recall to the Avalanche. In 49 games with the Monsters, Rissmiller produced 29 points to still finish fifth amongst forwards.

The 2002-03 season was when he scored 28 assists and 14 goals in 72 games played for the Cleveland Barons of the AHL. In the middle of 2003-04’s season Rissmiller received a call-up for the AHL’s San Jose, where he scored no points in just four games. In the same season Rissmiller scored the distinction of scoring 14 goals with 31 assists over 75 games played in the AHL. As he gained experience and gain experience, Rissmiller took part in during his first NHL lockout at Cleveland and scored 22 goals as well as 23 assists during 69 games on the first line. In the 2005-06 campaign, Rissmiller scored fifteen goals as well as 32 assists across 68 games.
