Michel is actively involved in a variety of space-related missions and projects that are focused on the research of small bodies as well as hazards from asteroid collisions. Michel is the leader of the European science team for AIDA, the AIDA Space Mission technology demonstration in collaboration with ESA and NASA that aims at deflecting this secondary of near-Earth binary Dydimos asteroid by through a kinetic hitor. AIDA will be entering Phase A of the study with ESA along with NASA beginning in the month of February. AIDA is a co-I for the JAXA Hayabusa2 and NASA OSIRIS REx sampling return missions to a distant asteroid that is primitive. Hayabusa2 was successfully launched on the 3rd of December, 2014 and OSIRIS-REx is scheduled to launch in September of 2016. He was a co-chairman of the science study team for the MarcoPolo-R sample return mission in the phase of assessment (2011-2013) within the European Space Agency (ESA). He is a member of the Near-Earth Object Mission Advisory Panel (NEOMAP) appointed by ESA to suggest space missions that are geared towards greater understanding of the threat posed by impacts. He is also the head of working on the Work Package on numerical simulations of collisions as well as asteroid deflection through a kinetic impactor, which is part of the European consortium NEOShield, which is funded with the FP7 program of the European Commission (2012-2015).
He is involved in a variety of international organizations and is part of the Science Program Committee of CNES (French space agency). He was elected Secretary of Division 3 (Planetary Science) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) between 2009 and 2012. He is a specialist in the physical properties as well as the dynamic and collisional development of asteroids. His research is focused on collisional interactions between asteroids the formation of near-Earth objects and in particular, binary asteroids’ physical characteristics as well as their response to different processes (impacts and tidal encounters shaking) in relation to their surface and internal properties, and the potential of collisions with Earth. His findings have resulted in over 70 papers in international refereed journals and have been included on the covers of both Science as well as Nature.
In 2006, he was awarded his “Young Researcher” prize from the French Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
